OFGC Organizer's Comments - October 2009

My vision when I started the Ohio Fingerstyle Guitar Club back in Feb '1999 was to find a core group of finger style guitar players and fans within a few hours drive from Columbus, Ohio and give them a forum to get together every now and then and share their passion of guitar - and, to give them a treat by inviting some of the best guitarists in the world to come play for us.  And, it worked that way - for awhile.  However, our Pickin' Parties have pretty much turned into "concerts" where I continually sweat out their financial success, and not much of the "sharing of our passions."

Now, I'll admit that I probably created this "concert" mentality when I decided to start inviting Guest Pickers to come play for us for the somewhat devious purpose of "attracting enough attendees to help pay the facilities and advertising costs."  I should have been more active in finding cheaper or "free" space to hold our meetings - or, a few sponsors to help offset the costs - but, it's obvious that isn't my forte.

So, we will be taking a break from having Pickin' Parties for awhile.  I'm actively pursuing a formal relationship with the Worthington Arts Council for the "reasonable" use of their beautiful new Peggy McConnell Arts Complex
so that we can get back to having our Pickin' Parties on a regular basis - no matter how many, or few show up.

In the meantime, a few of us local Columbus "pickers" will continue to get together every Tuesday night at Scotties Coffee House, 660 High Street, Worthington, Ohio from 7 -10 to "share our pickin' with each other."  We've been meeting there every Tuesday for over 8 years....  Come on in and jam with us.

Keep on pickin,
